How this is calculated
Recovered rare earth mass = magnet mass × rare earth content × recovery efficiency. The rare earth content comes from the magnet's datasheet. Recovery efficiency is an assumption: the real value depends on the process, and no process is modelled here.
Heating energy counts only the sensible heat needed to raise the magnets from the starting temperature to the process temperature. It ignores reaction energy, losses, furnace efficiency, and the energy of any hydrogen or acid steps. Carbon savings are not calculated, because they depend on your local grid and on the emission factors for mining and processing.
Show every assumption next to any published figure. Estimates like these should not be used for investment or procurement decisions without a process study.
Frequently asked questions
What are NdFeB magnets?
NdFeB, or neodymium iron boron, magnets are strong permanent magnets used in motors, electronics, and wind turbines. They contain rare earth elements.
Is the recovery rate fixed?
No. Recovery depends on the process and has to be assumed or measured. Enter your own value.
What does the energy figure include?
Only the heat needed to raise the magnets to the process temperature. Reaction energy and process losses are not included.
